I’d eat a whole lemon raw
I’d even bite into an unripe lime
Before choosing any other hill to die on
Besides the one where I deeply despise poems that intentionally do not rhyme.
I’d rather look at the world through a peep-hole
And stuff my face with the sourest key-lime pie
than to read you a poem with no rhythm
And convince you that the rhyme is all in the time.
When a poem doesn’t rhyme, I say– boo, what a bore.
I write poems all day long without ever skipping its celestial, quintessential core.
When a poem doesn’t rhyme, to me it seems to be fundamentally deficient
If it doesn’t dance when I read, how can you expect me to feel any emotion when it is just so…insufficient.
I like poems that rhyme because I like poems in Spanish
And that is how they must be.
I like chanting with passion using words with indigenous roots that bring about energy
Edifying the souls belonging to everyone, not just you and me.
In Spanish, there’s more words, more meanings, more ways to speak truths and more ways to tell lies
In Spanish there’s more than one way to love, more than one way to dream, more than one way to see the world using more than just your two eyes.
In Spanish, the poem must rhyme because the language in and of itself is incontrovertible poetry.
In English, I’m afraid there are simply not enough words for you to take Spanish translations any other way besides literally.
But my oh my, I desperately wish you knew what I mean
Spanish is so much better equipped for this whole poetry thing.
So forgive me, I’m sorry. I’ll stick to my side of the line.
It’s the greener side that allows me to sing to you with no music
Just about all of the time.
I apologize for complaining to you, but you must understand why.
To me, a poem without a rhyme is a version of a truly chilling all-american crime.
